Frequently Asked Questions
What age does my child have to be to begin learning an instrument?
Our private lessons generally require your child to be five or six years old. However, some
instruments may require a few more years.
For Brass and Woodwind Instruments, your child
would generally need to be about 8 years old.
For Drums, your child would generally need to be 7 years old.
Can we rent an instrument?
Although there are companies who do rent instruments, our research has found that rental prices are quite expensive with minimum rental periods and
high freight charges and we believe purchasing the instruments to be far more cost effective. Please contact the friendly staff at Music
Express Robina (ph. 55 930 488) for any enquiry regarding instrument sales.
Can we do fortnightly lessons?
You may, but we do not advise it as it tends to be too long between lessons. Our experience has found that by the time students return for
their next fortnightly lesson, they have quite often steered off course with the techniques and exercises their teachers have assigned them and
in many cases they have taught themselves bad habits that can take a long time to undo. Also, fortnightly lessons depend upon teacher
preference, availability and time slots. We cannot guarantee your time slot will be regular because weekly students get preference.

Can two people do a lesson with the same teacher at the same time?
We do not advise this, because each student learns differently and the whole point of private tuition is so that the teacher can change their
teaching methods to suit each individual student. Also, if you have siblings or even friends, they can be
extremely competitive, and if one
is a little bit better initially, then the other can become discouraged very quickly. This can also work in reverse where a student who may
excel in a one on one teacher / student lesson, can become bored because they are not learning at a fast enough rate.
Can we do exams with the teachers?
Yes, all of our teachers are able to guide your child/you through AMEB exams.
Do we have to do exams?
No, doing exams is a personal choice.
Do we have to learn classical music?
No, we take a modern fun approach to music and we encourage students to learn the music they are interested in. :)
If I am learning piano, can I practice on a keyboard?
Yes
Do I need an instrument before I start lessons?
No, except for Strings, Woodwind and Brass. However, down the track you will
need your own instrument to practise and be successful.
